Women's Health Q&A

Why do I need a women’s health exam?

At Simply Medicine, Dr. Miller encourages you to take care of your health by scheduling a woman’s comprehensive exam yearly to help prevent issues that could develop later.

A women’s health exam can help with the following:

  • Birth control
  • Reproductive problems
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Osteoporosis
  • Mental health
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Cancer prevention and treatment

Talk to Dr. Miller about any of your health concerns, and be sure to ask questions. Dr. Miller is happy to share her knowledge so you can better understand how to take care of your body.

What happens at a women’s health exam?

*During COVID, while serving her clients with exclusively telemedicine and home visits, Dr. Miller is not currently able to offer pelvic exams or pap smears. This preventative care service will resume when her clinic space re-opens.

When you see Dr. Miller at Simply Medicine, your women’s health exam begins with a consultation. She asks you questions about your family medical history, your personal medical history, and discusses any of your health concerns.

Dr. Miller then leaves the room so you can change into a gown for the exam. When she returns, she examines your breasts for lumps or abnormalities, performs a pelvic exam, and a Pap smear to test for precancerous and cancerous cells if needed. She also checks your blood pressure, heart, and lungs.

If you need birth control, she prescribes the appropriate medications for you.

During your exam, other preventive care might include:

  • Mammogram referral
  • Immunizations
  • STD screening
  • Bone density test

Depending on your age, Dr. Miller might talk to you about colon cancer screening, which is recommended at the age of 45.

At Simply Medicine, Dr. Miller’s goal is to prevent disease in your life and keep you well.

How do I prepare for my women’s health exam?

Before you arrive for your appointment, be sure to have any medical records transferred to the office at Simply Medicine. Having all your information helps Dr. Miller better assess your health.

Important information to bring or know for your exam includes:

  • The date of your last menstrual cycle
  • A list of all medications you’re taking
  • Plan your visit when you’re not having your period

You’re also encouraged to write down your list of questions before you see Dr. Miller, so you don’t forget to ask them when you see her.
